time travel without paradox |
Naked Monkey asks Ben Cypress Joy
How is it possible for you to come back in time to visit us without violating causality? What if you kill your own great-to the nth grandmother?
Ben says
History is not a single line. It's actually a vastly braided tapestry, in which quantum uncertainty creates many divergences and mergings among the time tracks.
When I was sent back to your time, a new branch of history was created in which I appeared. The old track (in which I did not suddenly appear in 1997 in the plaza at curiosity junction), still exists, and in fact, I plan to return to it at a point immediately following the time I left.
We all exist simultaneously in many copies, on many tracks.
