The most obvious and important attribute of life is that it reproduces itself. The first self-reproducing cells on Earth were incredibly primitive, but they had enclosed and self-regulating volumes, and selection forces were very strong.
Since it was important to be able to consistently produce offspring just like yourself, early cells developed a set of internal self-regulating mechanisms, which were copied and divided when the cell divided. Early genetics was a chaotic process, but out of the chaos came self-reproducing RNA molecules, and then the modern DNA system now used by all living organisms.
