Monkey's early
moments of shame
with Daddy

Four years old: On a beach crowded with thousands of people, I can't find Daddy or Mommy! In a panic, I run wildly, blindly. The only thing that is greater than my terror is Daddy's anger when he finds me.

Five years old: The whole family has gone out for dinner, a rare and wonderful treat. About halfway through the meal, I ask the waiter, "Hey, do we get any dessert?" Suddenly, Daddy becomes very angry.

Twelve years old: At dinner, I tell a little fib. It seems unlikely, so Daddy asks questions. Without realizing it, I build up a huge snowball of increasingly preposterous, grandiose claims. The snowball hits a tree, and suddenly I am busted in the kitchen, seared by Daddy's hot glare. The most painful thing he says is "I give up on this kid."
